On February 19th, I got the chance to get away and spend the weekend in our nation’s capital.
When I was invited, I was a little worried about how I was actually going to get there. Flying was a “no”. Since I quit my job as a flight attendant last year, I have no desire to step into ANY airport, let alone pay a full price ticket. I would now have to wait in the ridiculous security lines. I’ll pass.
It was suggested that I check out Megabus. I was told that there were fares as low a $1! I had never heard of Megabus, or a $1 fare, so research ensued.
Because I was planning my trip far in advance, sure enough, I got a $1 fare going to DC and coming back home. Grand Total: $2.50 round trip (including a 50 cents reservation fee). Tickets can range anywhere from $1 to $20 one way.
With prices this cheap, there’s no way you could have a great experience right? Wrong! So very wrong! The bus was very clean! Alot cleaner than most airplanes that I have been on. I didn’t use the bus restroom, as there were plenty of scheduled stops along the way, but I was told that the bathroom was just as clean. There is wifi, but only 10 minutes after driving off from a dispatch stop. What does this mean? Don’t count on having wifi your whole trip. Plan on alternative ways to entertain yourself.
To make things even better, I even arrived to my destinations 20 minutes early! I’m sure that wouldn’t happen every time, but the drivers do the best they can to stay on schedule!
I’m definitely going to use Megabus again! As my Uncle said, “You can’t get across town for $2.50!”
I sincerely hope that’s not the case, but if you are planning to do something extra special today, you need to get on it! Hopefully, your love won’t be to upset at you for being a little late to the party. Here are some cute, simple, and cheap ideas to stay out of the dog house:
I love the wine bottle candle holder idea from Design Sponge, but I don’t have a glass cutter, so I just stuck the candles in my cleaned-out wine bottles and it worked out lovely!

I did a little search on what men like to see women wear to bed and what women themselves like to wear if there’s a man in a bed. The findings were interesting to say the least! Men prefer women to wear nothing (big surprise!), but if a woman isn’t that comfortable with being in the buff just yet, they like women’s sleepwear to be sexy, but without trying too hard. Think white tank tops and some cute cotton underwear, his t-shirt or his favorite team jersey! I don’t know why the jersey surprised me, but it did!
Of course, women prefer comfort. It seems that the only reason we buy fancy lingerie for a special occasion (I’m not talking about buying fancy lingerie for ourselves!) is that we think that’s what men want to see. But it looks like men could care less about lace, garters and underwire. If I’m wrong, please let me know!
I feel like the pressure is off, and I don’t need to bother with the underwear theatrics. Oh, who am I kidding?! I’m not interested in buying that stuff! I do, however, want to wear something cute and comfy when heading to bed. A plain t-shirt is not going to cut it. Refashioning some t-shirts into a cute nighty is right up my ally!
An extra large t-shirt. I actually had extra large t-shirts scraps, so I used those.
something to decorate-I used Simply Spray, but you can use markers, appliques, etc.
Need some other ideas?
That probably says more about me than I should really reveal, but that’s how I feel about it. I like sexy, not slutty. I like covert, not overt. Serving bananas like that is just too obvious! For me! So I’m going to take overt down a notch.
semi-sweet chocolate if you have it
solid oil like coconut, palm shortening or even cocoa butter (food grade) if you have it
honey or agave nectar
toppings of choice like:
nuts or seeds
leftover chocolate chips
“Lean to the left, lean to the right, peel your banana and….cut into pieces!” You know you remember that cheer!
Place your sticks in now if you’re using them and place pieces on a parchment or foil- lined plate or cookie sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes.
Melt your chocolate in a double boiler. Just put a bowl over a small saucepan filled with water. Let the water come to a low boil.
If you are using cocoa, melt two tablespoons of your hard oil (I had coconut) in the microwave in a bowl. Add two tablespoons of cocoa powder and one tablespoon of honey or agave nectar. Stir until smooth.
Coat bananas in chocolate once. Let cool. Coat again, then immediately roll in topping of your choice. Put pieces back in the freezer. Put the frozen treats in an airtight container if they are not going to be devoured in one sitting.
You’ve seen these before right? They are called dirty dice or naughty dice and they tell you to do something to a certain part of the body. They are a lot of fun, and very dangerous! Sometimes though, they are limiting, since there is only six sides of the die. You can make your own and get really crazy with it and use whatever verbs and body parts you like!
I found a pic of a cube template. I downloaded it, and put it in my graphics program and typed in the words. If you don’t have a graphics program, you can just print out blank cubes and print words separately, then glue the words on the cube.
Massages are almost always expected on Valentine’s Day, and if you really want to make the experience memorable, you’ll definitely want to have some massage oil. There’s no need to buy one. It’s really easy to make one at home with a few ingredients you probably already have on hand.
You’ll need 2 cups of oil of your choice, one orange and one lemon. I used a combo of olive and sunflower oil. I’ve been getting 100% sunflower oil at the dollar store. It’s a nice light oil that’s high in vitamin E.
Using a vegetable peeler, carefully cut pieces of the orange and lemon peel.
You can place the bottle in a pan of hot water to warm before using. Make a cute label, and you’re ready to rub!
I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. It’s history is not very sexy. The commercialism is ridiculous. And how are you gonna express ALL of your love for someone in ONE day with a measly, poor quality, store bought box of chocolates? Or a meaningless card? Or a bland pre-frozen cake? Why are we letting a day on the calendar tell us when and how we should express love?
On the other hand, I’m aware that Valentine’s Day is just the reminder that some people need to show the one they love a little more appreciation. I knew an old man who hated holidays, but always celebrated Valentine’s Day because “everyone needs all the love they can get.” I totally agree with him on that!
So if you want with all your heart to participate in the holiday for your cutie, but don’t have enough green, this week is full of low cost ideas with a whole lotta heart!
Let’s start with the obvious: Chocolate!
I need chocolate sauce, and I’m not going to buy any. I don’t eat it that much, and the stuff in squeeze bottles in too junky! I have cocoa though, and I know that you can add an oil to it as a substitute for baking chocolate. I did a little more digging, and I found a few good recipes.
Drizzle this on a store bought cheesecake, homemade cookies, or various body parts. Just don’t limit it to February 14th.
